Barbara Cantlon
A member of the Washington State University faculty in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, Barbara has been a member of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra as an oboe and English horn player.
She is a graduate of
Temple University and East- ern Washington University. Barbara also studied with Louis Rosenblatt of the Phila- delphia Orchestra.
Larry Hudson
Band director in the Medford School District since 1973, Larry Hudson also teaches trumpet at Southern Oregon University and serves on the graduate faculty of the Ameri- can Band College.
He holds a bachelors degree from Southern Oregon Uni- versity and a masters from the University of Oregon.
He studied trumpet with Ger- ald Webster, Gerald Poe, Fred Sautter and George Recker.
Phebe Kimball
Previously General Man- ager and principal flutist in the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra, Phebe Kimball teaches flute at Southern Or- egon University in Ashland, Oregon.
She holds a bachelors degree from Drake University and masters from Southern Ore- gon University.
She was a flute student of Na- than Jones, Roger Stevens, and Russell Howland.
M. Max McKee
Editor of Bandworld Magazine since its inception in 1985, Max is co-founder of Western In- ternational Band Clinic, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. He is Professor Emeritus at Southern Oregon University where he contin-
ues to serve as Director of the American Band College masters degree program.
He holds three degrees from Washington State University, two in clarinet performance. He was a student of Randall Spicer, Eric Nelson, and Ron Phillips.
Richard Polonchak
Former principal bassoonist with the United States Ma- rine Band, Richard is a pro- fessional bassoon technician and designer. His articles on bassoon have been a regular feature of Bandworld Maga- zine for nearly 15 years.
Richard serves as a consultant for Custom Music Company and is the author of Primary Hand-Book for Bassoon, a pub- lication of Meredith Music Publications.
Val Phillips
Val Phillips served for years on the music faculty at Humboldt State University (California) where he was conductor of
the Wind Ensemble and opera program. He also served as Di- rector of the Chamber Music Workshop and taught applied horn.
He holds bachelors and mas- ters degrees from San Jose State University. His own stu- dents hold positions as hornists and teachers thought the U.S. and several foreign countries.
Robert Spevacek
Robert Spevacek is Director of Bands at the University of Ida- ho (Moscow), where he teaches conducting and applied music in low brass.
He has been an active recitalist on trombone, euphonium and tuba. Mr. Spevacek appears fre- quently as a clinician and guest conductor and served as the conductor of the first Western International Band Clinic High School Honor Band. He is also an elected member of the Amer- ican Bandmasters Association.
Randall Spicer
Randall Spicer is Emeritus Director of Bands at Wash- ington State University. His career began in the public schools of Colorado where for twenty years his programs received wide acclaim.
He has appeared throughout the world as a guest conduc- tor and is continues to serve on the Board of Directors of Western International Band Clinic and as a graduate fac- ulty member of the American Band College.
Stuart Turner
A ten-year professional musi- cian in Las Vegas, Stuart has been Chairman of the Music Department at Southern Ore- gon University for more than a dozen years. He teaches low brass and is conductor of both instrumental and vocal jazz groups.
He holds a masters degree from Northwestern University where he studied tuba with Arnold Jacobs. He also serves on the graduate faculty of the Ameri- can Band College at Southern Oregon University.
The Embou-Sure Series
Stuart Turner’s Tuba Embou-Sure appeared in the first issue of Bandworld Maga- zine in August 1985. In Novem- ber of that year, Larry Hudson’s Trumpet Embou-Sure was featured. Max McKee’s Clari- net Embou-Sure was published in two segments: January and then March 1986. May 1986 featured flute and horn. Novem- ber 1986 contained saxophone, while March 1987 brought both bassoon and trombone-baritone. The set was completed with Barbara Cantlon’s Oboe Embou-Sure in May 1987.
