What happens if I don't pass all portions (instrument startups, diagnostic rehearsals, written) of the 3rd year exit exam?

Written Exam

When a retake of some written exam test areas is required, the candidate has two options when the number of areas to be retested totals three or less:

1. Request from the ABC Director (by September 1) creation of an online exam (with Ultimate Pursuit) that will be administered by an approved proctor (school administrator). This exam will include only those areas not passed during the July 5 Exit Exam. It will be created with a unique login password for the administrator by November 25. It must then be administered no later than December 10. Candidate must submit the request along with the administrator title, mailing address, phone number and email address along with a $125 check made out to ABC.

—OR—

2. Submit by May 1 (following the July 5 Exit Exam year) a letter of intent to retake the portion of the exam including the appropriate test areas on July 5 of that year. If the candidate elects to attend Session B for credit, standard session fees will apply with Seminar credits awarded. If arriving only for the exam day, a $125 check must be made out to ABC and sent with the May 1 notification. Candidate will be responsible for inquiry as to the exact time and place of the July 5th exam at the Ashland High School Music Building.

If the retake of more than three areas is necessary, the candidate will be required to attend Session B the following summer and will be re-examined in the applicable test areas. Payment of standard fees for the Session plus the masters candidate fee will be in affect. So that the candidate will benefit from the hours taken, Mus 507 Seminar credits will be awarded instead of Pedagogy courses.

Demonstration Exam

If a retake of the diagnostic rehearsal portion of the exit exam is required, the candidate has two options:

NEW (since 2007)
1. Request from the ABC Director (by September 1) the assignment of an online Ultimate Pursuit audio/essay test. The test will consist of multiple MP3 excerpt sound files of "Yorkshire Ballad" by James Barnes. After listening to the sound files with Ultimate Pursuit (testing software), the ABC Candidate must explain what is wrong with the 30 - 40 second excerpt and offer solutions to each problem. The online test will be created with a unique login password for the administrator by December 14. It must then be administered no later than January 5. Candidate must submit the request along with the administrator title, mailing address, phone number and email address along with a $125 check made out to ABC.

NOTE: All "Yorkshire Ballad" excerpts (audio CD) were included in the ABC Study Set.

—OR—

2. Submit by May 1 (following the July 5 Exam Exam year) a letter of intent to retake the diagnostic portion of the exam on July 5 of that year. If the candidate elects to attend Session B for credit, standard session fees will apply. If arriving only for the exam day, a $125 check must be made out to ABC and sent with the May 1 notification.

If a retake of any startup lesson area is necessary, the candidate will be required to appear on July 5 the following summer and to be re-examined in the applicable startup lesson test areas. If the candidate elects to attend Session B for credit, standard session fees will apply with Seminar credits awarded. Otherwise, a $125 check must be made out to ABC and sent with the May 1 notification. Candidate will be responsible for inquiry as to the exact time and place of the July 5th exam Ashland High School Music Building.

Notification of Results

Whenever the January 10 deadline is involved, the candidate will receive notice and comments from the ABC graduate faculty member by February 15. July 5th retakes will be handled with other candidate grading; notification will be sent by August 23.
