What should I bring with me to Ashland?

All ABC Students:

  • Study materials, fingering/trill charts, etc.
  • Your main instrument
  • A mouthpiece/reed for a secondary instrument
  • Oboe and/or bassoon (you will have time to play these instruments with other ABC students). Be sure to bring at least a bassoon and oboe reed.
  •  Bring a wireless-enabled laptop computer to take notes during clinics, take entrance and final exam, and take short sample ABC tests to help with weak areas. The ABC lecture hall now has wireless (high-speed) internet.
  • Formal concert attire for the June 26th and July 4th concerts (men - black suit/jacket, women - black dress or pants)
  • ABC CATALOG (contains forms and important information)
  • A fan for your dorm room (it can get really hot during the Summer)

Dormitory Information:

  • Complete bedding and a pillow are provided.
  • Larger towels are provided (You may wish to bring a large bath towel and small hand towels.)
  • Weather can be VERY warm in Ashland during at least part of ABC. NO air conditioning in the dorm!
  • If you have a car, you will need to purchase a parking permit at $10 per week (via your dorm head resident).
  • Dorms have electrical outlets but some are not grounded. Bring an adaptor for your computer, etc.
  • Dorm food is dorm food but is better here than in most places. (Vegetarian available.)
  • Once signed up for dorm food, room, etc. (June 1 deadline), you cannot cancel or get refunds (due to the complexity of system).
  • If there is a chance you'll arrive early or need a room for a spouse, you must set this up NO LATER THAN JUNE 1st!
  • There are many restaurants and fast-food places in Ashland, 10 or so very near campus.
  • Downtown Ashland is a 20-minute walk from the dorms. About 15 minutes from the Music Building.
  • The local bus system covers Ashland and Medford area. Bikes work well too as there are many bike paths.
  • The ABC Music Building is a about 10-minute walk to the dorms.

Dormitory Dates & Meals - Regular Check-in, Check-out Information (Dorm: Greensprings A):

  • SESSION A - Arrival date: June 20 - Departure date: June 27 (Meals: breakfast 6/21 thru dinner 6/26)
  • SESSION B - Arrival date: June 28 - Departure date: July 5 (Meals: breakfast 6/29 thru dinner 7/4)
  • SESSION C - Arrival date: July 5 - Departure date: July 9 (Meals: breakfast 7/5 thru dinner 7/8)
  • No lunch is served on Sundays or July 4. Weekday lunches served at Stevenson Union when SOU can accommodate us.
  • If you are attending both Session A & B, you will need the night of June 27 as an added night of lodging.
  • If you are arriving early to take the masters entrance exam on June 20, you will need to add the night of June 19.
  • Our between-session and Session C courses are offered only to those taking Session A & B
  • Any other nights: Must be arranged BEFORE ABC starts! We may not be able to accommodate any special requests after June 1.
  • DO NOT GO TO THE DORMS BEFORE 4:00 P.M. FOR CHECK-IN!! Rooms will NOT be ready.
  • If you will be arriving after 10:00 P.M. on 6/19, 6/20, 6/28 or other dates, you must contact us (by 6/15) so that we can make special arrangements for you to obtain your key when you get to the dorm.

1st Year ABC Students:

  • Wireless-enabled laptop computer to take the ABC entrance test. As of 2007, ABC tests will be given on computer.
  • Baby picture of yourself - Needs to be scanned and uploaded to your account by logging at www.bandworld.org, click on "My Account," click on "Bio & Photos" to upload photo.
  • Current picture of yourself - Also needs to be scanned and uploaded to your account.
  • Upload an mp3 recording of your band. DO NOT try to save as an aif or aiff or wav. Length: 10 minutes maximum. Style: Include varying styles and tempos (by starting at the mid-section of an ABA-structured composition, for example). Composites of sections from 2 pieces is OK. Announce between the segments.
  • After logging into your account, type in your biography at "My Account," then click on "ABC Candidate Info" in the list in the left column.
  •  Questions about uploading files?

2nd Year ABC Students:

  • Sightreading score that was mailed to you
  • Baton
  • Previous year ABC notebook

3rd Year ABC Students:

  • Wireless-enabled laptop computer to take the ABC test on July 5. As of 2007, ABC tests will be given on computer.
  • Concert score that was mailed to you
  • Baton
  • Work it out with other 3rd year ABC students to bring an extra horn, clarinet, and snare drum for the instrument start-up rooms on July 5
