ABC has realigned its program with Sam Houston State University of Huntsville, Texas.    As a Distance Learning Program The American Band College clinics and rehearsals will be held in Ashland, Oregon from June 20 - July 8. All courses, projects, online classes will be handled through Distance Learning at SHSU.           April 29, 2010: THE WIZARD is in place and working to step you through the various actions necessary in our realignment with Sam Houston State University. Be sure that you have completed all of the various aspects related to the WIZARD and your file details. All ABC students must send official undergraduate and graduate level transcripts to SHSU. Click on Wizard button above for helpful links and exact procedures. Please note that: The American Band College program will function through Sam Houston State University. Sam Houston State University will offer a Master of Music degree aligned with its normal curriculum associated with the Conductor’s track. Sam Houston State University will work with students who have already received credit toward the Master of Music degree with American Band College to ensure that the appropriate credits are transferred. Through Sam Houston State University's Distance Learning Program, the American Band College will offer 12 units/credits in residence in Oregon and the remainder of the course credits will be given on-line. Should SOU decide to continue its master’s program, it will not be integrated with the American Band College. Admission to SHSU for the Master of Music (ABC) Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher for regular admission. Probationary Admission may be granted for those who do not qualify for regular admission. A student may complete a maximum of one semester on probationary status. To petition for regular admission, a student must earn a grade of “B” or better in each course completed under probationary admission. Probationary admission does not guarantee regular admission upon completion of coursework. Supplying of all transcripts of college-level work from any institution where work for credit was done, including a transcript showing the date the undergraduate degree was conferred. Assessment by program graduate faculty via major projects and one-on-one advising. Program 2-part entrance exam (Music Theory and 30 areas of Band-related Areas of Mastery) required on June 20. Those whose Music Theory score are too low will be required to do remedial work and take the Analytical Techniques course and pass it by the 2nd summer. Those whose scores in Band-related Areas (transposition, literature, fingerings, intonation problems, percussion rudiments, embouchures, etc.) are too low, must take additional stem courses to improve knowledge in the area and may be required to attend an additional summer unless future work allows graduation in-track. QUESTIONS: Will the cost of the degree cost more than previously indicated on the ABC website? No. Because of this exciting new alignment with Sam Houston State University, we can offer the degree at the same cost. Do I need to travel to Sam Houston State University (SHSU)? No. Through Sam Houston State University's Distance Learning Program, the American Band College will offer 12 units/credits in residence in Oregon and the remainder of the course credits will be given on-line. Clinics/rehearsals will continue to be in Ashland, Oregon from June 20 through July 8, at the completely remodeled Music, Theater and Athletic facility at Ashland High School. All courses and projects are handled through Distance Learning at SHSU. Will the ABC coursework/concerts be different now that the degree is aligned with Sam Houston State (SHSU)? Requirements will align with Sam Houston State University’s curriculum – some courses in residence and the rest on-line. This curriculum will include the concerts, performances, clinics and rehearsals that make the American Band College experience unique. Outstanding ABC clinicians from around the world will be hired to work in coordination with Sam Houston State University faculty to provide a quality program. Concerts/performances will still be held at the Craterian Theatre (Medford), Ashland parade route, and the Ashland High School football stadium on July 4. What lodging options do I have during my time at ABC? ABC has been fortunate to secure high quality rooms with several motels; however, because June-July is high season with the start of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, we do not have enough space (nor a viable cost factor) that allows us to provide any single rooms. Considering that we have been able to include many amenities, including all double queen beds in each of the motels and other items never found in dorm situations, we think you'll find the inclusion of breakfast every day and lunch most days in the lodging package very positive. Students will be allowed to transfer any appropriate previously earned credits. Sam Houston State University will work with each student individually to ensure a smooth transfer.
