The Bandworld Legion of Honor was established in 1989 to honor, over the course of a year, eight of the finest band directors in our business.

Recipients have taught for at least fifteen years, have maintained a very high quality concert band program, and have contributed significantly to the profession through dedication to bands and band music.

Each is honored at the annual Sousa Foundation awards ceremony during the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.

Chairman of the Legion of Honor Committee is Terry Austin,Virginia Commonwealth University.

Robert Carroll

Robert Carroll has been the Director of Bands at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia for the last 20 years, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 2002. In that same year he was awarded the NBA's Citation of Excellence. Robert received his bachelors degree from East Carolina University and earned a masters degree from the University of Illinois. He currently serves as the President of the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors' Association. His concert bands have received Superior ratings in the VBODA District festivals for the past ten years.

Robert credits his family and especially his wife, Darla, with being supportive of his career choice. Along with his family, the association with extremely supportive colleagues have made him the teacher he is today. Robert says,"I give my students the best opportunities I can everyday."

Phil Hartman

Phil Hartman has been the director of bands at Centennial High School in Boise since 1987 . He has been named the Idaho Music Educator of the Year, the District III Music Educator of the Year and recently received the Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts.He earned his bachelors degree from Boise State University and his masters degree from West Virginia University. He has served as Band Chairman for the State of Idaho, President of the District III Music Educators and the State President of the National Band Association. His bands have 17 consecutive Superior ratings in the District III Band Festival. He has been influenced by outstanding teachers in his life, notably Melvin Shelton, Gary Green, Marcellus Brown, and Harry Begian.

Phil's simply stated philosophy is that he tries to bring the highest quality music program to the greatest number of students possible.
